This man had a great interest in knowing the truth and he bought
many books and went to many seminars and with all that information,
he went into a cave and he studied and studied there.
After some time,
he came out, stood in the middle of the city and said: "Worship me."
Nobody paid attention but
he kept insisting and this went on for days.
One month passed and he kept saying" Worship me, please." After three
months, was saying: " Worship me, a little bit." Nobody paid
attention. After the fifth month, people would walk over him and
pushed him aside.
He then, thought: "Maybe, I have not understood."
So, he went back to the mountains
and began to study the books again, but since he had already
studied them, this time he studied the books backwards and even
standing on his head.
Three years passed and he went back and while passing by the
town, he said:
" These are ignorant, so he went to other town
and he stood in the center of the square saying: " I am
beautiful, handsome, I know everything and nobody knows more
than me."
Well, the people of that city were more radical and
when they heard what he was saying, they made fun of him and started to stone him,
so he had to run for his life.
Since there were no more towns
around and since he already knew everything of what he read in the
books, he decided to go away and he walked and walked until he found
himself in an unknown, far away place.
He sat under a tree and thought
"
I know so much that I shine brighter than the sun." The hours
passed and it was almost night time, it was getting colder and darker
and he said: " I will shine as the stars in the night." But there were
no stars that night, it even rained, and he said: " This is an
inferior world, that is why, I am not recognized."
And he walked
farther away. Many years passed and he kept walking as a madman,
suffering from hunger and misery.
While traveling, he found a man
sitting under a tree, and since there was no other tree around and
the temperature was very hot, he sat by his side.
The man greeted him and asked : " What are
you doing here.?" And he answered
: "
Same as you, looking for shade."
But at the same time, he was
thinking: " Maybe this one, will be able to recognize my glory." And
said: " Excuse me, what do you see in me?" The man answered:
" I
see a tired, ragged old man who seems to have hunger and thirst."
And
he
said: "Nothing else?" And the other answered:
" What else should I see?"
The other one said:
" Maybe you are right. But let's talk, I am a
great erudite and know many secrets. How come that you have not been
able to recognize me?"
And the man said: " Forgive me, but
I do not know what that word means, I only know that it is hot and
this tree gives me shade. I do not know anything else."
Then, the
man who called himself erudite, said: " I understand now. I spent
all my life, studying without realizing that the study is one thing
and the practice is another. I can understand now that the truth
does not belong to anybody.
This man who knows so little, knows that
he is experiencing hot and he has shade under this tree. I thought
that I knew very much but I realize now that I know less than him. I
do not know anything, I am a fool, since this man has taught me the
difference between to know and to understand."
